About:

This species of dragonfly is known to be an ambush predator and will often sit in sunny spots , in groups, in order to catch passing prey or to chase off other dragonflies. This species likes the warmth and can be found all year round in mainland Europe however can only be found within certain months or not at all depending on your location within the UK.

When you can find it:  July to October (2 months earlier or later if conditions are optimal)

Fun Fact: This species age can be determined by its colour, with yellow showing that the insect is young and brown showing that it is old

How to Identify:

The males of this species are red-orange in colour whilst the legs are all black often with a yellow stripe. The females of this species are yellowish and slowly become brown with age, this is similar to the wings of both genders which will eventually become tinted brown. This species has large eyes that cover most of their face and they will often be found perched in areas with lots of sun light.
