The Speckled Wood is a native species which is widespread across the UK. There are subtle differences between this species in the North and South of the UK, for example the ones in the south have orange spots and the ones in the North have white. Although this brown butterfly may appear harmless, in many cultures they are considered messengers of the underworld.

How to identify:
This butterfly is another almost fully brown butterfly. This butterfly has distinct markings in a mix of yellow and dark brown spots dotted across its hind wings. These markings are much brighter for the females of this species as well as this the males have a grey colour around their body on their hind wings, further distinguishing males and females of this species.
